Vanilla from Papua New Guinea
Vanilla ranks second to Saffron in the world market. The current world market demand for vanilla is 2,000 tonnes per annum, which equates to about K80 million in monetary value. However, volume of vanilla exports from PNG to overseas markets increased to 118 tonnes in 2003 compared to over 50 tonnes in 2002, valued at K63 million. Since then, the export volume from PNG has dropped. In PNG, the exact land area under vanilla cultivation is not known. The main growing provinces are East Sepik, East New Britain, Sandaun, Milne Bay, Morobe and Madang.
